£258 Million Cash Boost for Police "Record Breaking" - McNeil

MSP for Greenock & Inverclyde, Duncan McNeil, has welcomed the extra £258 million which will be invested in Scotland’s police forces over the next three years as "the best ever package for Scottish justice."

The announcement is part of an extra half billion pounds to be invested in Scotland's justice system as a whole. Other priorities include support for victims of crime.

Welcoming the announcement, Mr McNeil said:

"To live in a safe community, free from the fear of crime is not a privilege - it is a right.

"The Scottish Parliament is taking action to fight crime. We are cracking down on drug dealers and drug related crime and have already announced £10 million to establish the Scottish Drugs Enforcement Agency.

"I am confident that this announcement, which will increase the justice budget to £1847 million and police funding to record levels, will help us build on this work and rid our streets of crime.

"These funds will make sure that more crimes are prevented; that more of the crimes which are committed are detected and solved; and that more criminals who are brought to court are convicted."
