McNeil Welcomes Establishment of "Mums for the Rankin"

In a debate in Scottish Parliament, MSP for Greenock & Inverclyde, Duncan McNeil, has welcomed the formation of "Mums for the Rankin". As pupils from St. Ninian’s Primary School, Gourock, looked on from the public gallery, Mr McNeil congratulated the local, non-political group on its work to secure the future of maternity services in Inverclyde.

Mr McNeil said:

"The St Ninian's Primary School pupils' presence is timely, as many of them will have been born in the Rankin maternity unit. They will surely verify the concern that exists in my community about the future of the unit and how much it is valued by the community.

"I welcome the establishment of Mothers for the Rankin. My colleague Trish Godman and I met some of its members on Friday. It is a powerful alliance of mothers who are not politically affiliated.

"When we spoke to the mothers on Friday, they said what mattered to them was access to quality care, choice and continuity of care."

Mr McNeil later told the Telegraph:

"I am delighted that people with a genuine interest in the future of local maternity services have come together in such a constructive manner.

"It is crucial, if we are to look for a long-term solution to this situation, that we argue with our heads as well as our hearts. That is why the work being done by Mums for the Rankin in constructing a compelling case to be presented to the Health Board is so important."
