McNeil Chairs First Meeting of Clyde Coast Initiative
MSP for Greenock & Inverclyde, Duncan McNeil, today chaired the inaugural meeting of the Clyde Coast Initiative at Vikingar in Largs.
The Initiative, which was announced during a Scottish Parliament debate on the regeneration of the Clyde on 23rd February 2000, aims to consider how to use the Clyde to regenerate the communities on its coast.
It will, says Argyll & Bute MSP, George Lyon, "bring together organisations that are interested in developing the Clyde, such as local enterprise companies, local authorities and community organisations."
Mr McNeil said:
"It is high time we took full advantage of this natural asset.
"The Clyde was the basis of Greenocks past success and it could be the basis of success in the future.
"To take a single example, consider the huge boost to our economy of fast and regular ferry services going from Ayrshire to Glasgow, via Inverclyde and Paisley. A river link between manufacturers in Greenock and the airport in Paisley would reduce our reliance on roads; improve the ability of our companies to deliver on time; and encourage more businesses to locate here.
"The Clyde Coast Initiative is a vehicle for delivering this regeneration. I am proud to be involved in such an exciting project and am determined that it will deliver for the people of Inverclyde."
