Call for overall strategy for A78
MSP for Greenock and Inverclyde, Duncan McNeil, has today called for a co-ordinated approach to tackle the road safety problems on the A78.
Speaking after a meeting on the subject which took place today between IBM workers, representatives from the police, Inverclyde Council, local Councillors, the Community Councils and property developers, Mr McNeil said:
"If we are to finally achieve a permanent solution to the problems on the A78, we need a comprehensive long term strategy. There are a number issues on various stretches of this road. Having to cross the road puts IBM employees at risk twice a day. The expansion of the Inverkip Marina will inevitably increase traffic at an already dangerous stretch of road. The volume and speed of the traffic leads to residents in Wemyss Bay and Inverkip finding it difficult to even get on to the road.
"These are separate, serious concerns. But everyone at the meeting this morning shares a common interest in the A78.
"We need to look at all these issues together. Simply considering individual problems after they have arisen will result in the development of a series of piecemeal stopgaps.
"Further to our request, IBM confirmed that the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents will, in January, begin investigating various solutions to this problem and will take representations from all interested parties. This pooling of expertise will assist in the formulation of credible solutions. ROSPAs involvement will also lend the case for long term action important expertise and standing.
"That is why this meeting was so important. It allowed all the interested parties to sit around the same table and discuss how we can take things forward."
