Local Campaigners Assured Over Incapable Adults Bill

At the Scottish Parliament today, MSP for Greenock and Inverclyde, Duncan McNeil, met and assured local members of the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (SPUC) that the Scottish Executive’s proposals for adults with incapacity would not lead to "back door euthanasia."

Mr McNeil was happy to meet the campaigners and assured them that:

"It is clear that we need a bill to protect the rights of adults who lack the capacity to make decisions for themselves.

"The Bill makes many important improvements. For example, the right of a relative to manage funds in the interest of an incapable adult is widely accepted.

"In the area of medical treatment, I confirm my total opposition to passive euthanasia. The act of euthanasia inflicted on someone is to be regarded as a deliberate killing and should be dealt with under the law of homicide."

Notes:

The Bill in question is the Adults with Incapacity (Scotland) Bill
