£87,000 to make Inverclyde's Streets Safer

Community safety in Greenock and Inverclyde has been given a boost after the Deputy Justice Minister, Iain Gray, made £86,357.50 available to fund crime prevention and community safety projects in the area.

The cash, allocated under the Community Safety Award Programme, will be available in each of the next three years directly to Community Safety Partnerships to fund community safety initiatives such as CCTV.

MSP for Greenock & Inverclyde, Duncan McNeil, welcomed the move, saying:

"Crime does not only affect victims and their families.

"Every crime committed increases the fear of crime – which can be as big a barrier to building a strong, confident community.

"People have a right go about their daily business free from the fear of crime. That is why the Scottish Parliament has been putting sustained investment into community safety projects and CCTV - the sort of steps which help prevent and detect the sort of drug-related crimes, such as house-breaking and car crime, which most worry the public.

"This extra funding will build on this work. It will help us feel safer and be safer."

The cash could be used for a range of projects. For example, funding education and diversion schemes for young people, security programmes for the elderly, drop-in centres with advice on crime prevention and projects assisting the victims of crime.
