Press Release

12th January 2000

Duncan McNeil to Become First Labour MSP in New Question Time.

MSP for Greenock and Inverclyde, Duncan McNeil, has been selected as the first Labour MSP to ask a question in the new format First Minister’s Question Time.

The new format, which is an open question time, allows more supplementary questions from backbench MSPs. This will give ordinary backbench MSPs more opportunity to question the Executive.

Mr McNeil will use the opportunity to raise the issue of BAE Systems’ bid to build up to 6 roll-on-roll-off ferries at their Govan shipyard.

The question, in full, reads:

"Mr Duncan McNeil: To ask the First Minister what steps have been taken by Scottish Ministers to support the bid to build up to six roll-on-roll-off ferries for the Ministry of Defence at BAE Systems’ Govan shipyard. (S1F-17)"

Mr McNeil, who has already met the stewards at the yard and is a member of the Scottish Parliament Cross Party Group on Shipbuilding, today said:

"I am pleased to have this opportunity to raise such an important issue in a high profile situation.

"This bid is not only important to the Govan community. Many workers in that yard live in Greenock and Inverclyde. Securing such a contract would maintain and expand local employment opportunities."
