Press Release
10th October 2000
October Week Pavement Politics
MSP for Greenock & Inverclyde, Duncan McNeil, will be taking politics back to the streets this October Week.
In the first event of its kind in Inverclyde, he will be conducting new style "Roving Surgeries" throughout the Greenock & Inverclyde constituency.
Under the system, over 1700 families in Greenock, Gourock, Inverkip & Wemyss Bay have received correspondence advising them that Mr McNeil will be in their area at a given date and time. If anyone wishes to raise any matters regarding the NHS, education, transport or any other Scottish Parliament issue, they simply display the correspondence in their window and Mr McNeil will call round.
Commenting on the initiative, Mr McNeil stated:
"In the new Scottish Parliament era, the traditional approach of politicians sitting behind desks, expecting people to come to them with issues seems a bit out-dated.
"It is my responsibility as the MSP for Greenock & Inverclyde to make sure that every one of my constituents has the opportunity to become involved in the political process. I hope that this exciting political experiment will prove to be another example of how the Scottish Parliament can bring politics closer to the people."
Mr McNeil will, of course, continue to hold regular traditional surgeries throughout the constituency. His new 2000 / 2001 surgery calendar is available from his Pottery Street office on (01475) 791 696.
ENDS
Notes:
The surgeries will take place on Tuesday 17th, Wednesday 18th and Thursday 19th October.
