Duncan McNeil Comments on Remoter Areas Case Study

Labour MSP for Greenock & Inverclyde, Duncan McNeil, has rubbished press reports claiming that the Parliament’s Enterprise & Lifelong Learning Committee had been told that people in the Western Isles were not assertive enough to work in call centres due to their Hebridean shyness.

The Remoter Areas Case Study, carried out as part of the Committee’s Inquiry into the Impact of the New Economy by Mr McNeil and Tory list member for the West of Scotland, Annabel Goldie, in fact says no such thing.

Mr McNeil said:

"The report we agreed contained no reference to shyness. The word "shy" does not appear once.

"The views which Ms Goldie expressed when delivering the report to the committee were her own, strongly held, personal views. They are not my views, they are not the views of my colleagues and are not backed up by the report.

"I made this clear at the meeting and have today written to the people I met whilst carrying out the case study and to local MSPs, underlining the fact that I in no way endorse Ms Goldie’s opinions."
