Statement from Duncan McNeil MSP re National Semiconductors

Commenting on a recent press report regarding National Semiconductors and grants received from Locate in Scotland, MSP for Greenock & Inverclyde, Duncan McNeil, said:

"I am sure that, on reading the original reports, I was not alone in being concerned.

"It is vital public money is used to attract, maintain and improve our manufacturing capability and not squandered.

"I therefore contacted both National Semiconductors and Locate in Scotland, asking for their comments. I am pleased that they have agreed to make available to the public details of the situation surrounding, and the conditions upon, the financial support given to the company.

"It is essential that, if the public are to have confidence in our system of creating jobs and supporting industry, the process is open and transparent. The more open we can be, the less opportunity there is for abuse.

"I am glad that this episode has led to greater understanding of how Locate in Scotland work with inward investors. I hope this spirit of transparency can be taken forward.

"I will also be following this up with a visit to National Semiconductors in the coming weeks. This will give me the opportunity to meet the new Managing Director and discuss the company’s long term future in Greenock."
