Parliament Comes to Greenock

Greenock & Inverclyde will score another Parliamentary first in September when it hosts the first ever virtual official committee meeting outwith the Scottish Parliament.

The meeting, a full formal session of the Enterprise and Lifelong Learning Committee, will take place in the IBM plant in Greenock. The committee will take evidence for its "Impact of the New Economy" Inquiry, linking in with witnesses from across the world.

MSP for Greenock & Inverclyde, Duncan McNeil, who sits of the Enterprise & Lifelong Learning Committee and suggested the plan, said:

"Where better to hold a discussion on the impact of the new economy, than Greenock? This is a town which symbolises regeneration through technology. Traditional industry has declined, but new industries have enabled us to begin our regeneration.

"The impact of technology on today’s economy is clear. But, by linking in to IBM’s other global facilities, we can take evidence from throughout the world on exactly what the new economy will mean for our future.

"Every day technology is bringing politicians and government closer to the people they serve. Moving parliamentary committees from Edinburgh is another step towards making it easier for us all to get involved in the decisions which affect our lives."
