PRESS RELEASE

Greenock and Inverclyde MSP Duncan McNeil has welcomed the decision by the UK Supreme Court to back the right of people in Scotland to claim damages for the asbestos-related condition pleural plaques.

He also insisted it was a fitting tribute to the late Frank Maguire, the lawyer integral to the campaign who passed away a few short weeks ago.

He said: “This is absolutely the right judgement and represents a victory for common sense.

“Despite the delaying tactics of the insurance companies, who have spent more than two years trying to overturn the will of the Scottish Parliament, those with pleural plaques will be able to pursue the damages they are entitled to.

“A community like Inverclyde knows only too well the tragic legacy of industrial disease and we can all take some satisfaction now that those who have suffered the most will finally get justice.

"Tthis successful fight for justice is fitting legacy to the hard work and dedication that Frank and the team at Thompsons had shown in getting us here."
