Help at hand for housing changes

Greenock and Inverclyde MSP Duncan McNeil is encouraging people with disabilities to take advantage of a new home adaptation grant.

The scheme was launched this month and is open to people living in privately owned housing who need to make changes to cope with their disability.

Among the structural adaptations you can claim for are:
- replacing the bath with a walk-in shower
- constructing a ramp to help getting into the home
- fitting lower surfaces to make the kitchen easier to use

The grant can cover at least 80 per cent of cost of the improvements.

Mr McNeil said: “This is a welcome initiative – where possible, disability shouldn’t be a barrier to everyday tasks around the home.

“We have an ageing population in this country and if people are to continue living in their homes, we are going to need to make these changes to their houses.

“So it is important that help is given to people to enable them to make these costly adaptations.

“Help is out there and I would encourage anyone with a disability who is having difficulty in their home to arrange an assessment.”
