9,000 Fine Snubs

Offenders in Greenock have received nearly 9,000 warning letters for ignoring fines meted out by the local justice system it has emerged.

The figures were released by the Scottish Court Service in response to a freedom of information request submitted by Greenock and Inverclyde MSP Duncan McNeil.

Duncan McNeil said:

“These figures are a slap in the face for the victims of crime. If people are to have confidence in the justice system then they need to see these fines being paid up.”

“The sheer number of warning letters shows that people are just ignoring them and that the overstretched justice system is sending these letters out knowing fine well that they will be chucked in the bin.”
