Knife crime shock

September 30th, 2009

Greenock and Inverclyde MSP Duncan McNeil has called for action after Inverclyde was revealed as danger area for knives and violence.

New figures show that Inverclyde show that Inverclyde was third worst area for attacks with an offensive weapon.

The MSP said: “These figures confirm what we already knew – violence and knives are blighting our communities.

“Overall figures appear to be down and I would commend the police for doing a good job under tough circumstances.

“But the numbers are still unacceptably high and it is clear we need to remove violent offenders and weapons from our streets and provide respite to our communities and police officers.

“If we are going to turn around this culture of violence in the long-term, we need to take action at all levels, including tougher punishments for offenders.”
