A78 disappointment
September 16th, 2009
Greenock and Inverclyde MSP Duncan McNeil has insisted that road safety measures planned for the danger junctions at the A78 Inverkip don't go far enough.
The MSP raised the issue with Transport minister Stewart Stevenson more than a year ago and was delighted when Transport Scotland agreed to carry out a three-month survey of the road earlier this year.
But the road bosses have now rejected calls for a roundabout or traffic lights and have instead opted for 'a package of low cost accident investigation and prevention measures' at all three junctions.
The MSP believss this won't go far enough to deal with the high accident rate at the junctions.
Mr McNeil said: "This has been a long time coming and I raised this issue with the minister last June.
"So for Transport Scotland to come back with a low cost, or should I say no cost solution, and reject any radical measures is very disappointing.
"No one I have spoken to about this issue seriously believes this will improve the safety of these junctions.
"If Transport Scotland had properly consulted people about the traffic problems then I am convinced they would have arrived at a different outcome."
The MSP now plans to meet with community representatives to discuss how to take forward the raod safety campaign.
