Caring for the carers

Greenock and Inverclyde MSP Duncan McNeil is calling for more support for Inverclyde’s army of unpaid carers.

On a visit to Wellpark Mid Kirk for the launch of Inverclyde Carers Week, the MSP insisted that supporting carers is the right thing to do and makes economic sense in this difficult time.

The area is thought to have more than 8,000 carers who receive too little or sometimes no assistance for looking after a relative or loved one.

The National Carers’ Organisation estimate that Inverclyde’s unsung heroes are saving the NHS millions every year.

He said: “We must look after carers to ensure they get access to the support they need, whether it be respite care, training or simply advice.

“Given our reliance on unpaid carers, it is only right that we offer them the support they deserve for carrying out this vital role in society.

“We simply can’t afford to do without them. Carers do what they do out of love and a sense of responsibility but it is time we recognised the important role they play in our communities.”
