Baby unit makeover
Greenock and Inverclyde MSP Duncan McNeil is backing the new-look maternity unit at the Inverclyde Royal.
One year on from the decision to save the unit, the MSP joined other campaigners who had fought for its retention at the hospital for a visit.
Midwives gave the MSP and the group a tour of the baby unit, which has been given a make-over, and were able to show off the up-to-the-minute facilities, including the new birthing pool.
And the MSP was pleased to hear the take-up had been steadily growing in the last 12 months.
He said: “The reason we fought so hard to have this facility retained was so that women would have a choice.
“Understandably, many people initially had reservations about having their child in the new baby unit after the consultants were moved to Paisley.
“But confidence is steadily growing in the fantastic team of midwives we have up there and I am pleased more and more women are choosing to have their child in this excellent facility right on our doorstep.
“This latest investment is very welcome and I am sure families will be impressed when they see their set-up for themselves.”
Mary Bruce, an ex-nurse and local health campaigner who also attended the tour, said: “The place has been modernised and its very attractive.
“The head midwife was very reassuring and was able to answer any doubts that people may have.
“Everyone has to keep their eye on the ball and make sure that local women get the possible service.”
