Launches 2006 Scottish Poppy Appeal Community Advertising Campaign
MSP for Greenock and Inverclyde, Duncan
McNeil, will officially launch the 2006 Scottish Poppy Appeal community
advertising campaign in the west of Scotland at Greenock Central Library today
(Monday 30th October).
A
1.5 minute advert on the Scottish Poppy Appeal will run in 13 libraries for 14
days, up to Remembrance Sunday on 12 November, capturing an audience of 65,000
people. Poppies will also available to purchase in these locations.
Mr McNeil
said:
“The
Scottish Poppy Appeal is the only charitable appeal officially recognised by the
Scottish Parliament and I am honoured to be launching the 2006 appeal here in
Greenock. We must never forget the
sacrifice which our servicemen and women have made, and continue to make, on our
behalf and the annual Scottish Poppy Appeal is our opportunity to repay some of
the debt we owe them.”
Poppyscotland
Chief Executive, Jim Panton, commented: “The number of new people who need our
help, both now and in the future, is constantly being topped up by the ongoing
dangerous and high-profile military conflicts around the world. Poppyscotland
exists to help these veterans and their families. The library advertising
campaign is an excellent way to highlight our message.”
Organised by
Poppyscotland (formerly The Earl Haig Fund Scotland) the Scottish Poppy Appeal
supports veterans and their dependants living in Scotland. In 2005 a record £1.4
million was raised and Poppyscotland hopes to do even better this year
Money raised
from the Scottish Poppy Appeal is spent in the following ways:
Providing
direct financial assistance to veterans and dependants;
Funding
an advice service, including pension claims and appeals;
Supporting
the employment of veterans with disabilities in Lady Haig’s Poppy Factory,
Edinburgh
Providing
grants and research for organisations that deliver specialist support to
veterans.
