£3.6
Million to Tackle Antisocial Behaviour in Inverclyde
Inverclyde is set to receive £3,665,000 to
help in the fight against antisocial behaviour, it has been announced.
The announcement comes on the same day as the Council takes up new powers
to impose £100 on-the-spot fines on noisy neighbours.
MSP for Greenock and Inverclyde, Duncan McNeil,
says the cash will help build on schemes which have already proved a success
locally – such as the community warden service.
“Parts of Greenock and Inverclyde are already
benefiting from community wardens and a dedicated antisocial behaviour team,”
he told the Telegraph.
“And I am confident that this money will sustain and expand these
valuable, popular services.
Local agencies working with local people will
identify their own local priorities in which to invest. It is likely, however, that most of the new funding will be
used to continue and strengthen services which were set up with the first
allocations of antisocial behaviour funding in 2004/05 and 2005/06.
These services included:
Community wardens;
Services for victims and witnesses of antisocial behaviour;
Mediation services;
Specialised antisocial behaviour teams; and
Local helplines to report antisocial behaviour.
The Noise Provisions of the Antisocial
Behaviour Act also came into force today. Local authorities will be able to take
powers to set up noise control services and impose £100 on-the-spot fines on
noisy neighbours.
Allocations
were made according to a formula which took account of crime and deprivation
rates. Allocations for future years
will only be disbursed upon Ministerial approval of outcome agreements and
satisfactory progress towards outcomes.
