Turn
Out to Turn Up Heat on Health Bosses – McNeil
Saturday’s
march and rally against NHS Argyll and Clyde’s proposals to downgrade
Inverclyde Royal Hospital is his community’s chance to turn up the heat on the
Health Board bosses, MSP for Greenock and Inverclyde, Duncan McNeil, has said.
Mr
McNeil, a member of the Scottish Parliament’s Health Committee and a
long-standing opponent of centralisation in the NHS, has been working with trade
unions, clinicians, elected representatives and others to oppose the plans since
they were unveiled at the beginning of June.
Speaking
ahead of his address to the rally, he said:
“This
is not just an issue for me as an MSP – it’s personal.
“As
I said in a recent debate in the Scottish Parliament, the IRH isn’t just in my
constituency, it’s in my community. It
is my hospital and my family’s
hospital.
“The
Health Board’s ill-conceived and deeply unpopular plans for its downgrading
must be opposed. Key to this –
alongside working with clinicians, academics, trade unions and others to draw up
credible alternatives – is leaving the Board in no doubt about the strength of
public feeling.
“I
would therefore urge the people of Greenock of Inverclyde to come out on
Saturday to show their support for their local hospital and demand that the
Health Board thinks again.”
