Shielhill
Walkers Take a Different Route
Members of local walking group, the Shielhill Wednesday Club, were slightly
off their usual track today, when they visited the new Scottish Parliament
building in Edinburgh.
The group were
welcomed by MSP for Greenock and Inverclyde, Duncan McNeil, before touring the
new building and sitting in on a
parliamentary debate.
Speaking after the group's visit, Mr McNeil said:
"I was
delighted to welcome the Shielhill Wednesday Club back to the Scottish
Parliament. They made the trip to our temporary home further
up the Royal Mile in 2001 and I hope they found today's visit as informative and
interesting.
"They are the
latest visitors from Greenock and Inverclyde which I have had the pleasure of
welcoming to Holyrood. It's encouraging that so
many people want to see the new building and what goes on inside."
The Shielhill Wednesday Club's visit follows their previous trip to the Parliament's temporary home on the Mound. In November 2001, around 50 club members visited the Parliament and attended the afternoon's debate in the Chamber.
Since opening to the public on 7th September 2004, the Parliament has been bustling with a wide range of visitors from across the country. Figures published in May revealed that visitor numbers had passed the 300,000 mark, with nearly 10,000 visitors a week.
Anyone interested in visiting the Scottish Parliament can get free information on organising their visit from Mr McNeil's constituency office, or on the website: www.scottish.parliament.uk
The Shielhill
Wednesday Club's meetings are held in St Mary's Church Hall, Houston Street,
Greenock at 14:00.
