Kerr Report to be Unveiled
Health Minister, Andy Kerr, is expected
to outline the findings of Professor David Kerr’s group on the future shape of
the health service to MSPs in the Scottish Parliament later today.
Speaking
ahead of the announcement, MSP for Greenock and Inverclyde, Duncan McNeil, said
he hoped Prof. Kerr’s report would mark the end of the failed board-by-board
approach to service reorganisation which ultimately led to “careering
centralisation” in the NHS.
“Having
visited Greenock twice in the course of his investigations,” said Mr McNeil,
“Professor Kerr understands the challenges we face and knows how damaging a
lack of proper strategic planning can be to health services.
“Professor
Kerr has been looking at what overall shape an NHS fit for Scotland in the 21st
Century should take. I hope that
the Executive’s willingness to commission and examine this extensive piece of
work marks the end of the failed board-by-board, crisis-by-crisis approach to
service reorganisation.”
He
continued:
“There
will be a lot to digest in the report and I wouldn’t expect to be debating the
fine detail in the Chamber this afternoon.
That will take place in the coming months, once we’ve had a chance to
scrutinise the findings in detail.
“To
that end, I am backing moves to invite Professor Kerr to a special evidence
taking session at the Health Committee in advance of any full parliamentary
debate.”
