Leith
Visit was Eye Opener – McNeil
Commenting
on his recent visit with David Cairns MP to see how the Leith waterfront has
been transformed by regeneration, MSP for Greenock and Inverclyde, Duncan
McNeil, today said:
"Leith
used to be a place of rejection, an area people couldn’t wait to leave.
Today, thanks to the transformation of the waterfront, businesses and
people are flooding back. In place
of the old ship yard, for example, now stands Ocean Terminal.
Elsewhere, derelict warehouses have been replaced by new flats, retail
outlets, leisure facilities, offices – and the jobs, money and growth which
comes with them.
"There
should be no reason why the same can’t happen in Inverclyde.
While Leith had the advantage of the City of Edinburgh behind it, we are
starting from a slightly higher base – a lot of our derelict waterfront land
has already been cleared and decontaminated, leaving it ripe for development.”
