Make Learning your New Year’s Resolution -
McNeil
Local people who want to get back to
work or escape temporary, dead-end jobs are being urged to make learning new
skills their New Year’s Resolution.
MSP for Greenock and
Inverclyde, Duncan McNeil, says that taking advantage of the Scottish
Parliament’s new Individual Learning Account (ILA) scheme could be the first
step towards getting back to work or improving your career opportunities.
Speaking at Greenock’s
Craigend Resource Centre, where he was encouraging patrons to access the new
funds, Mr McNeil said:
“The right skills and
qualifications – and the ability to acquire and continually update those
skills – are essential to get ahead in today’s job market.
“Cost should not be a
barrier to adult education and ILAs can give you up to £200 a year to help pay
for a wide range of courses.
“If you’re sick of
low-paid, temporary, dead-end jobs and know you can do better, why not make a
New Year’s Resolution to call free on 0808
100 1090 for an application pack? Who
knows where it might take you.”
Under the scheme, Scottish
learners will receive up to £200 a year to pay for courses.
Initially, ILA Scotland is
available to people whose income is £15,000 or less, who can use the funds
towards a wide range of courses.
An additional offer, to be
launched in 2005, will have no income restrictions and will provide funding of
up to £100 per year. It will be available for Information and Communications
Technology (ICT) learning up to and including Scottish Credit and Qualifications
Framework Level 5 or equivalent.
For both offers, learners
will be asked to provide a minimum contribution of £10 for each course they
undertake.
All the learner has to do to
access these funds is to call free on 0808
100 1090 and request an ILA Scotland application pack.
