McNeil Comments on Marches and Parades
Report
Commenting on the independent report by former Strathclyde Chief Constable, Sir
John Orr, reviewing the handling of marches and parades, MSP for Greenock and
Inverclyde, Duncan McNeil said:
“I was pleased to note that many of the key
organisations welcome Sir John’s report – an impressive feat, considering
how contentious this issue can be.
“There
were, as Sir John points out, 12 Orange, Hibernian and other marches in
Inverclyde in 2003. And, in
a free society, we all have the right express our cultural traditions.
At the same time, however, we have the right to go about our daily
business in peace.
“I'm
glad that Sir John Orr's report recognises these rights and that he has done his
best to strike a balance between them. Not
an easy task, but I hope this report will help get some common sense, tolerance
and transparency into the decision making process.”
