“Picture Inverclyde, See the
Potential”, Holyrood
Told
Today, Thursday, 22 March, 2007,
Inverclyde Camera Club are at the Scottish Parliament, promoting their recently
launched exhibition ‘Picture Inverclyde’, which presents one hundred
positive photographic images of Inverclyde.
The exhibition, which was initiated by Camera Club members, came about from tiredness of the negative depiction of Inverclyde. Keen to publicise some of Inverclyde’s positive attributes, and to produce a record of the area’s regeneration, the Camera Club set about gathering seasonal, timely and unique shots, which will be on show in the McLean Museum, Greenock from 12 March to 14 April.
Involving local schools was a great way of getting the young people in the area involved, where 20 entries were received for three categories – Primary, Secondary 1-3 and Secondary 4-6, capturing their ‘favourite place in Inverclyde’.
Inverclyde Camera Club president, Gaie Brown commented:
“Inverclyde has become a stereotype of run down buildings and a fallen shipping community and we are working very hard to shake that off.
“The
exhibition is only a flavour of the many positive and exciting attributes that
the area holds. We are trying to make a difference and show the passion we have
for one of the most scenic riverfront areas in Scotland.”
Local MSP, Duncan McNeil has supported the initiative from the outset and now Urban Regeneration Company (URC), Riverside Inverclyde, will show their support by sponsoring the Camera Club’s album’s, which will be available to view from Monday, 22 March, for one week, at the Scottish Parliament.
Mr McNeil said:
“I am delighted that the Camera Club and the competition winners are coming to the Parliament to launch the albums which showcase their excellent work, allowing MSPs, Ministers, staff and visitors from around the world to see the best of Inverclyde. And I appreciate the contribution which Riverside Inverclyde has made to this event.
“I’m also really pleased that, in what will be one of his last official duties as Presiding Officer, George Reid will be accepting the albums on behalf of the Parliament.”
Bill Nicol, Chief Executive of Riverside Inverclyde added:
“We are committed to the regeneration of Inverclyde and where possible, use local skills, talent and knowledge to help us achieve our objectives.
“The Camera Club project is actively changing perceptions of Inverclyde, portraying what is more reality, that is, an area with a wealth of positive aspects and attractions.
“It is now time, with our partners and supporters, to deliver a programme of regeneration, which will enable the area to become a more positive and aspirational place to work, live, visit and do business.”
Today,
presiding officer, George Reid, will accept six handmade albums from Camera Club
president, Gaie Brown, which will be available for MSPs, Ministers, staff and
visitors at Parliament, giving them the opportunity to experience the wonderful
positive aspects of Inverclyde.
