Outrage
at Councils' "Death Sentence" on At-risk Children
MSP for Greenock and Inverclyde, Duncan
McNeil, says that local authorities who are sending children back to an abusive
or neglectful household could be condemning them to a death sentence.
Mr McNeil, a campaigner for
at-risk children to be rescued from dangerous homes sooner and forever, said he
was outraged to learn that Inverclyde Council is one of at least seven local
authorities exposed in today's press as not meeting all of the terms of Place of
Safety warrants.
He said:
"I have repeatedly
highlighted the scandal of those children in Scotland who are right now living
in a world of squalor and extreme danger.
"It's bad enough that
these children are left in such totally unacceptable circumstances for far too
long. But I am horrified that, when
the authorities finally get their act together and rescue a child from an
abusive or neglectful household, they send them straight back.
"If you did that to a
dog, you'd get the jail.
"Councils could be
condemning these kids to a death sentence.
It is outrageous and I will be calling on the Minister to intervene now
and protect these most vulnerable children here in Inverclyde and across
Scotland.
