Greenock Minister Rides to MSPs’ Rescue
Minister of Greenock’s Wellpark Mid Kirk, Reverend Alan Sorensen, has been praised for riding to the rescue in the Scottish Parliament today. Outside the Parliament Chamber

When the scheduled speaker for today’s “Time for Reflection” – the regular weekly parliamentary slot in which representatives of all major faiths invite MSPs to reflect on current events from a spiritual perspective – became unavailable at short notice, Mr Sorensen was ready to step into the breach.  He travelled from his central Greenock parish to deliver a very well received speech to MSPs in the Parliament Chamber.

Praising Mr Sorensen’s readiness to ride to the rescue, MSP for Greenock and Inverclyde, Duncan McNeil, said:

“It is always good to see local people in and around the Parliament and I am very proud, not only that a Minister from my own constituency was selected to lead Time for Reflection, but also that he was so willing to lend a hand at short notice.

“That’s a great advert for Greenock.”

Speaking outside the Scottish Parliament, Mr Sorensen said:

“It is, of course, a great honour to be the first clergyman from Greenock to take Time for Reflection.

“It was strange, though, to return to a building with which I am more familiar in its traditional role as home of the General Assembly, but to be there as a visitor.”

Time for Reflection is held in the Chamber of the Scottish Parliament before parliamentary business begins on a Wednesday.  The purpose is to allow representatives from all major faiths the opportunity to invite MSPs to reflect on current events from a spiritual perspective.
