NHS Bosses Launch Review of Fertility
Services
Revelations that drug addicts have
received fertility treatment on the NHS have prompted NHS Greater Glasgow and
Clyde to launch a high-level investigation into the service.
The
move was confirmed by health bosses to MSP for Greenock and Inverclyde, Duncan
McNeil, who had voiced his concerns with the Board after the scandal was
uncovered in May.
Mr
McNeil said:
“The
health board should be praised for taking this issue seriously and moving
swiftly to investigate. It’s a
scandal that, when hardworking couples in a safe, stable home are being denied
fertility treatment, public money is being spent bringing children into the
dangerous and chaotic world of drug-addiction.
“It’s
imperative that these questions are not just examined in Glasgow and the west.
We need national guidelines, and if these are not going to be forthcoming
from the Executive, then at the very least the work being done in Glasgow must
be designated the lead review for Scotland.”
Chaired
by the Board’s Director of Public Health, the review will examine the
provision of fertility services across the Health Board area. Members of the review group will come from a range of
backgrounds and will have different skills and expertise.
