£128,000
to Improve Inverclyde School Discipline
MSP for Greenock and Inverclyde, Duncan McNeil, says a £128,542 award to
improve discipline in local schools will make it easier for Inverclyde’s
children to succeed in the classroom.
Nearly £35 million will be
invested across Scotland over the next three years to support teachers in
dealing with unruly pupils and improve school discipline.
Education Minister, Peter
Peacock, has confirmed that up to 1,000 new support staff could be recruited,
including learning
support assistants, classroom assistants and pupil support base
staff.
Mr McNeil said:
“Our
children’s education is already suffering thanks to the terrible state of our
school buildings, but their
learning environment shouldn’t be made even worse by unruly, disruptive
pupils.
“Good
learning requires good order in the classroom and educational support staff play
a critical role in helping teachers reduce indiscipline.
This funding, which is in addition to the £10 million already
distributed to councils to implement the Discipline Task Group’s Report
‘Better Behaviour Better Learning’, can go a long way to tackling this
problem.
“Inverclyde
Council is set to receive £128,542
this year and further funding will be made available for 2007-08.
This will allow the Council to look at a range of options to better deal
with disruptive pupils, improve discipline and help free up teachers’ time,
creating a better learning environment for all pupils.”
Education Minister Peter
Peacock said:
“The
extra staff I am funding will free teachers to teach the new curriculum, help
all pupils to learn undisturbed and deal intensively with those pupils who need
it most.
"Step
by step, over the last five years, we have been putting in place the methods and
resources to allow parents to send their children to schools where the
conditions for learning are improving. Today's announcement is another
significant step forward.”
