Sports Minister Praises Up-to-par Practice Facilities
Sports Minister, Patricia Ferguson, today saw for herself the junior practice facilities on offer at Whinhill Golf Course and met some of the young golfers who are making good use of them.Culture Minister, Patricia Ferguson MSP; Duncan McNeil MSP; Junior Golf Convener, Gary Havlin; and Whinhill Juniors at Whinhill Golf Course

The practice area, built with £29,400 of sportscotland funding, allows local youngsters to hone their golfing skills or just get a taste for the game.

The Minister said:

“I’m delighted to see that the funding which has been made available through sportscotland has been put to such good use.  This practice area is accessible to the whole community; giving both aspiring young players the facilities they need to develop their game and beginners the chance to give it a try.”

MSP for Greenock and Inverclyde, Duncan McNeil, said:

“Golf if a wonderful game.  Yes, it has lots of laudable benefits – it gets you out in the fresh air, keeps you fit and teaches you concentration and self-discipline – but it’s also great fun.  And best of all, it’s a game which is with you for life.  You start at 8 and play until you’re 80.

“I’m therefore delighted that these facilities are giving our young people the chance to pick up a set of clubs and discover the joys of being a golfer for themselves.”

Junior Golf Convener, Gary Havlin, paid tribute to all the volunteers whose hard work made the project possible:

“While the funding was important, we couldn’t have made our vision a reality without the hard work of our army of volunteers.  Their drive and ambition made the creation of these facilities possible and it’s great to see their efforts are bearing fruit, with the number of people using the practice area continuing to increase.”
