Claims “entirely without foundation” – Peacock
Education Minister, Peter Peacock, has
dismissed as “entirely without foundation” claims by Convener of Inverclyde
Council’s Education Committee, Cllr Jim Mitchell, that he has already reached
a decision on the Council’s school re-organisation plans.
In
a letter to MSP for Greenock and Inverclyde, Mr Peacock states:
“Further
to our discussion today regarding the reference to Ministers of proposals by
Inverclyde Council regarding school re-organisation in the area…. I regard the
issues as extremely important and they deserve the fullest consideration…. I
can confirm to you that I have not therefore made any decisions on the issues.
Any press reporting or commentary that implies that I have arrived at
decisions is entirely without foundation.”
Welcoming the Minister’s
reassurances, Mr McNeil said:
“Cllr Mitchell’s ill-informed comments bore all the hallmarks of the high-handed and arrogant way in which he has mishandled this whole issue from the outset. It’s no surprised that they have caused a great deal of concern among parents who already fear for the future of their children’s schools.
“I
am therefore pleased that the Minister has categorically refuted Councillor
Mitchell’s story and has confirmed that a decision will only be made after the
fullest consideration of the facts.”
