Road
Safety Improvements on A78
IBM
staff at Greenock’s Spango Valley plant are set to have safer journeys to and
from work, following the announcement of new road safety measures.
MSP
for Greenock and Inverclyde, Duncan McNeil, says action is to be taken after
staff at the plant raised their concerns over safety.
Transport Minister, Tavish Scott, has now told Mr McNeil that pedestrian
crossing facilities at the plant will be improved, as will the adjacent bus
stop.
Mr
McNeil said it was important that safety of the employees was safeguarded:
“The
A78 at IBM is designed to carry traffic at speed.
It’s a fast, major arterial road and so it is important that IBM
workers can get from the bus stop to their work in safety.
“This
is all the more important when you remember that IBM’s international call
centre employs many workers from countries where they drive on the right.
Anyone who has been on holiday to the continent over the summer knows how
easy it can be to look accidentally in the wrong direction when trying to cross
the road.
“So
it’s good news that steps are being taken to improve safety for IBM workers
and, of course, for the other road-users on this stretch of the A78.”
In
a letter to Mr McNeil, the Minister says:
“In
response to continuing safety concerns it has been decided, in consultation with
IBM, to proceed with alterations to the carriageway which will involve the
stopping up of the existing vehicular exit from IBM and the rearrangement of the
existing pedestrian crossing facilities and at the bus stop adjacent to IBM.
Amey expect the works to be completed by the end of October.”
