Manufacturing
in Inverclyde
Commenting on the manufacturing figures
released today by the GMB, MSP for Greenock and Inverclyde, Duncan McNeil, said:
“The
decline of manufacturing in the UK has been felt acutely in our community, as
companies look to take advantage of cheap overseas labour. Indeed, that is why the Scottish Executive has made the
regeneration of Inverclyde a top priority.
“I’m
sure, though, that the GMB will welcome the manufacturing jobs which Amec have
created in the dry-dock and the fact that the jobs of many of our skilled
shipyard workers in Govan and elsewhere have now been secured.
“We
cannot compete – nor should we try to compete – with sweatshop economies on
the basis of cost. Rather, we need
to replace the type of manufacturing jobs we have lost with better paid, higher
skilled, more secure careers. That
is precisely why the regeneration of the waterfront, the creation of
Inverclyde’s own Urban Regeneration Company, the Gourock transport interchange
and our fair share of civil service jobs are vital to our local economy’s
future.”
