Die of Embarrassment, McNeil Urges Constituents
MSP for Greenock and Inverclyde, Duncan
McNeil, today urged his constituents not to die of embarrassment as he launched
the Beating Bowel Cancer Loud Tie Campaign with clinicians at Inverclyde Royal
Hospital.
Mr McNeil was sporting a loud
tie to encourage people to talk out loud about what is one of the deadliest, but
also most treatable, cancers.
Mr McNeil said:
“Each year, 35,500 men and
women in the UK are diagnosed with bowel cancer. It is the second most deadly cancer, but, ironically, also
the most curable. 90% of bowel
cancer deaths could be averted if it was caught early enough.
“I am therefore backing
Beating Bowel Cancer’s Loud Tie Campaign to encourage people to talk about
what they might feel is an embarrassing problem, raise awareness of the symptoms
and, ultimately, save lives.
“Don’t worry about what
your doctor might think. Getting
any problems checked out isn’t stupid – but literally dying of embarrassment
is.”
The Loud Tie Campaign is an
annual event and encourages people to wear loud, garish ties (or scarves) to
send out the message that people can talk out loud about bowels and bottoms,
ending the embarrassment associated with bowel cancer which can prevent
sufferers from seeking early diagnosis and treatment.
