McNeil Welcomes Doubling of NHS Budget
MSP for Greenock and Inverclyde, Duncan
McNeil, has welcomed today’s news that investment in Scotland’s NHS has doubled
since the creation of the Scottish Parliament in 1999.
Mr
McNeil said that NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde will receive a 6% increase in its
budget in 2007/08 – meaning an extra £98.2 million will be spent on health
services in the area and the average amount spent on every resident will rise
from £1000 in 1999 to £2000 in 2007/08.
Mr
McNeil said:
“Today’s
announcement that investment in the NHS has doubled since devolution underlines
that, when we talk about improving health in areas like Greenock and Inverclyde,
we put our money where out mouth is.
“While
I am proud of this achievement, though, the job is by no means done and we need
to build on the progress we’re making with tackling the big killers in
Greenock and Inverclyde – heart attacks, strokes and cancer.”
Scotland’s
14 area health boards and 8 special NHS boards will receive around £7.8 billion
in 2007/08.

Notes
The revenue allocations for area
boards announced today are calculated using the Arbuthnott formula. The
formula takes account of the population in the NHS Board area, the age of the
population, gender, level of deprivation and the proportion of population living
in remote and rural areas.
In
2007-08, total health spending per capita in Scotland will be £2019. This
compares to £974 in 1999-00, and £1867 in 2006-07. In England, the comparable
figure for next year is £1839
NHS
Greater Glasgow and Clyde’s allocation for 2007-08 is £1,734.9 million.
Last
year saw significant increases in productivity. NHS
Scotland carried out nearly 6,500 hip replacements (up 13% year on year); 5,525
knee replacements (up 19% year on year); 5,500 angioplasty heart operations (up
21% year on year); and over 29,000 cataract operations (inpatient and
outpatient, up 14% year on year). It
also saw 4.5 million outpatients attendances;
1.4 million new A&E attendances; over half a million attendances at
nurse-led clinics.
