Future
of renewable energy mapped out
Renewable
energy targets are to be expressed in terms of installed capacity in order
to be better quantified and more widely understood, it has been announced.
The Executive's strategy for renewable energy, "Securing a Renewable Future: Scotland's Renewable Energy", built on its previous target that 18% of electricity generated in Scotland should come from renewable sources by 2010 - raising the aim to 40% renewables by 2020.
The Forum for Renewable Energy Development in Scotland (FREDS), has recommended that the 40% target should now be expressed in terms of installed capacity and related to Scottish electricity demand rather than generation. FREDS' assessment is that a total of 3.4GW of additional renewables projects beyond those already built and consented, would be required to meet that 40% target, now expressed as a total of 6GW.
The Executive has also accepted the findings of FREDS' reports on developing Scotland's biomass and marine energy potential. Action to implement their recommendations is underway.
Further
investment in National Park
Deputy Minister for the
Environment, Rhona Brankin, has announced £9 million in funding for a new
headquarters for the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park
Authority, which will be built in Balloch.
The Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park was established in July 2002. The Park Authority has four statutory aims:
To conserve and enhance natural and cultural heritage;
To promote sustainable use of the natural resources;
To promote understanding and enjoyment (including recreation); and
To promote sustainable economic and social development of local communities.
The National Park Authority has been based in temporary portakabin accommodation since its establishment in 2002. A project manager will be appointed shortly to lead the building project, which will be managed and overseen by the authority.
