SECTION 2 – NEWS

New air routes to Germany and Italy
Two new air routes between Scotland and Germany and another between Scotland and Italy have been launched -

·     Glasgow Prestwick International to Dusseldorf (Neiderrhein). The service is expected to begin on 8th November 2004 and will use a Boeing 737-800 series aircraft with a maximum of 189 seats.

·     Glasgow Prestwick International to Hamburg (Lubeck). The service is expected to begin on 1st March 2005 and will use a Boeing 737-800 series aircraft with a maximum of 189 seats.

·     Glasgow Prestwick International to Pisa. The service is expected to begin on 1st March 2005 and will use a Boeing 737-800 series aircraft with a maximum of 189 seats.

These routes have been offered support from the Executive's £6.8 million Route Development Fund, set up in November 2002 to help secure new direct air services to Scotland and to encourage business links, investment and inbound tourism.

The Route Development Fund is provided through the 2002 Scottish Budget with £5.5 million from the Executive, £1 million from Scottish Enterprise and £300,000 from Highlands and Islands Enterprise. The fund is operated in partnership with Scottish Enterprise, which administers the fund on the Executive's behalf.

Waterfront developers can learn from Dutch - Minister
Culture Minister, Frank McAveety, has met with representatives from the Netherlands’ key architectural institutes to learn about ways in which the Dutch are leading the world in urban design and waterfront redevelopment. The Minister, who is responsible for the Executive's policy on architecture and the built environment, was visiting the Netherlands as part of the Scottish Executive's “Scotland in the Netherlands” promotional campaign.

Mr McAveety met with, among others, figures from the Netherlands Architecture Institute and representatives of the Chief Architect's Office in The Hague.  He is the first of four Ministers who will visit the Netherlands during September and Ocotber.  Each Minister, who will be undertaking a series of engagements relating to their portfolio, will be using their visits as opportunities to promote Scotland to a European audience.

The Minister's programme is part of a wider initiative to promote Scotland as an attractive place to live, work, study, visit or with which to do business.

SECTION 3 - NOTES ON THIS WEEK’S CHAMBER BUSINESS

The first week of parliamentary business in the new Holyrood chamber is largely taken up with a statement and debate on the Scottish Executive’s Programme.

After the First Minister’s statement, there will be a short adjournment to allow Members to consider the measures announced.  A full debate on the contents of the statement will then commence at 11:05 and continues until 17:00.

The day concludes with a Member’s Business debate on International Suicide Prevention Week from myself.

The debate on the Scottish Executive’s Programme continues on THURSDAY morning.

This is followed by First Minister’s Question Time.

In the afternoon, after Question Time (for the departments featured in the themed section this week, see Section 1 above), the debate on the Scottish Executive’s Programme is concluded.

The day is then rounded off with a Member’s Business debate on North East of Scotland Sports Facilities from Brian Adam (SNP).
