Setting Sail for a Brighter Future
One
of the best things about politics is the range of people you meet.
True, you need to deal with all sorts of characters whose motives are far
from pure and selfless, but you also encounter many more thoroughly decent
individuals who are determined to make sacrifices so that they can make a
difference.
Take
the team behind the floating medical centre, Amazon Hope.
As you may recall, in 2001 a volunteer crew sailed her from Glasgow
across the Atlantic and up the Amazon River, where she delivers health care to
thousands of the region’s poorest people.
But
the charity behind the project didn’t stop there and has now acquired and
refitted a second ship - Amazon Hope 2. Equipped
with her own operating theatre for minor operations such as cataracts, a state
of the art dental surgery and pharmacy, she will plough up and down the Amazon
delivering health services to remote communities.
Before
embarking on her trans-Atlantic voyage, however, Amazon Hope 2 will, as you may
have read, be visiting Custom House Quay at the weekend, allowing you to come
aboard, find out more about the work she will be doing alongside her sister
ship, tour the medical suite and more.
The
vessel will be open from 10am to 6pm on Saturday and from noon until 3pm on
Sunday. So, if you’ve got a spare
hour over the weekend, why not go along and show your support for this great
venture?
