The Eyes Have It
You
might have thought it was never coming, but, after what seems like a very cold,
very long winter, spring has at last made a tentative appearance.
This
is a good time to get on with all the jobs you found excuses to put off over the
winter: fixing the fence, putting up those shelves, getting second place in the
SPL etc. But one job which now
won’t cost you a penny is going for that overdue eye test.
If
you’re having to read this paper at arm’s length, or you can’t see what
bus is coming until it’s gone past, now’s the time to go for the free NHS
eye test to which everyone is from this month entitled.
Because,
as local opticians Reid McKellar made clear when I visited them last week, you
won’t just get a basic sight test, important as that is.
You will receive a full eye assessment, which can detect the symptoms of
diabetes or increasingly common eye problems, such as early stage cataracts.
Like
other aspects of your health, keeping your eyes in good shape is all about
spotting and treating any problems quickly.
And, of course, the sooner a problem is diagnosed, the easier it’s
treated.
If
the potential benefits of these free tests are to be fully realised, however, we
need to take advantage of them - and that includes those who haven’t set foot
in the optician’s in years. You
don’t need 20/20 vision to see that.
