Linking
to Regeneration
Now that the school holidays
are here (6 weeks of quality time with your little darlings;
1,008 hours of “mum, can you make me a…” and “dad, can you take
me to…” They can’t come round
soon enough, can they?), your mind might be turning to thoughts of jetting off
to the sun.
Have you noticed, though,
that airports in foreign cities seem much easier to get to than ours?
We’re lucky that Glasgow Airport is on our doorstep and it’s a simple
matter to get a friend or taxi to run us up. But
people from further afield, or here on business, have to negotiate a selection
of trains and buses, unless they want to add to the already heavy traffic.
At last, however, we’re
catching up. The Bill to build a
rail link to the airport has now cleared its first parliamentary hurdle.
Not only would this link
benefit the ever increasing number of passengers using Glasgow Airport, the
reduction of traffic in the area would be good news for the environment and for
those of us who commute along M8 to Glasgow or beyond.
More importantly, as the
Committee which examined the Bill found, the link will bring economic and
employment benefits to the more deprived areas of the West of Scotland.
While the business case does need to be sharpened up as the proposal goes
forward, making the airport more accessible will, for example, make Inverclyde a
more attractive place in which to do businesses.
