Regeneration
Strategy
That
the First Minister, Deputy First Minister and Communities Minister all came to
Greenock to launch the regeneration strategy tells us all we need to know about
its importance. But it also
underlines the fact that, to win what we call the “regeneration game”, you
need a team of players from every aspect of government.
As
the First Minister made clear, this new strategy is about ensuring a joined-up
approach across Executive departments and agencies in support of local action.
All
this might sound wearily familiar, but what makes this announcement different is
what underpins it. There is,
perhaps for the first time, a real consensus right across government that
Inverclyde must be the Executive’s top priority. There is a strong commitment,
as shown by the creation of our own Urban Regeneration Company, that all the
agencies must work together effectively, rather than merely paying lip-service
to partnership working. And there
is also the recognition that this could be our last chance to get it right.
So,
now that we’ve unveiled this new framework, what are we going to do with it?
Increasing
the number of local companies and local jobs are obvious key steps, as are
higher wages and arresting the population decline.
The URC will work to attract new investors to Inverclyde and more
derelict land will be reclaimed, giving us more prime development opportunities.
We
have been handed a unique opportunity to transform our community and we need to
grab it with both hands.
